Psyche & Eros

Butterflies are probably the most fascinating, mysterious and most beautiful of creatures.

They have symbolised change, happiness, beauty and the soul in different of cultures across the world. Their metamorphosis can symbolise potential within living creatures to change and improve.

In Greek mythology, Psyche is a personification of the soul, she is symbolised by a butterfly. From many of the sources I have read, ‘Psyche’ in greek means both ‘butterfly’ and ‘soul’. The love story behind Psyche and Eros (God of Love) and how she gain immortality is one of the most well known myths; in which Psyche has to deal with a number of issues that affect the soul, such as jealousy, loneliness, betrayal and death. Psyche is a portrayal of the human soul, purified by misfortune and suffering, prepared for pure and true happiness.
